Dogs deserve clean teeth and fresh breath too! Beyond the cosmetic side, brushing is a good way to prevent oral diseases.
Just as with us, brushing removes plaque. Over time, that plaque can turn into tartar, which cannot be removed by brushing and must be removed by a vet.
How to brush their teeth?
Start by getting them used to being handled with your finger, so they are not afraid. Then move on to a toothbrush.
Do not use toothpaste made for humans! The menthol smell is unpleasant for them and our toothpastes are not made to be swallowed, which is exactly what your dog will do. Use dog-specific toothpastes, with a pleasant flavour, which they can swallow safely.
How often? Ideally every day… but twice a week is already a good start.
From what age? From as young as possible.
Technique: start with the outer surface of the teeth, reaching right back to the last molars. Then, little by little, get them used to opening their mouth so you can brush the inner surface. Careful: they are not used to keeping their mouth open for long and may nibble the brush… or your finger.
If your dog already has tartar, take them to the vet to have it removed.
