For many families who work away from home and love their dogs, there is a genuine concern about finding ways to make the lonely hours of the day more productive for their pet.
Dogs need physical, emotional and mental stimulation for a balanced life. Leaving these intelligent, active and social beings without any stimulation is a sure recipe for frustration — and, as a result, for a range of behavioural and physical problems.
A few tips:
Exercise first thing in the morning — before leaving the house, walk your dog and burn off their energy; toys and activities make the moment more fun.
A special place at home — safe, with enough food and water, access to relieve themselves, a comfortable bed and toys; large enough for them to move around freely.
Dog walker — specialised professionals walk dogs for owners who lack time or have limitations; there is a proper way to walk a dog that works the animal on several levels.
Pet sitter — so that your pet stays in a familiar environment, with familiar scents and extra attention.
Day care (doggy daycare) — increasingly common: your dog works on their social skills, is never alone and burns off energy in company; many daycares also offer training.
Environmental enrichment — toys such as the Kong, puzzles and slow feeders make your dog work mentally to get to the food; over time, hide the toys so they use their sense of smell.
Pet cameras — let you check how your pet is spending their time and what needs to be adjusted.
A new companion — many families adopt a second pet; even so, enriching the environment remains important, otherwise you will have two frustrated dogs.
Make the most of your time together — when you are together, make it quality time. Do not outsource your dog's care 100%: that way, the time you spend apart will not be so difficult.
