10 dog training principles every owner should know

10 dog training principles every owner should know

1. Listen to your furry friend — If they seem uncomfortable around another dog, animal or person, don't insist. Forcing the situation can lead to serious problems. Understand the cause of the discomfort and work at greater distances until they feel comfortable.

2. Be generous with affection — Most people have no trouble showing displeasure, but they overlook the good things. Give plenty of affection when your dog does what was expected — with enthusiasm, so it's clear what has been done well.

3. Do they actually like it? — "All dogs love it" on the packaging doesn't mean yours does. Soft biscuits tend to be more successful than hard ones. Find out what truly delights your furry friend.

4. Say what you want them to do — Just saying "no" doesn't give enough information. If they jump up at someone, ask them to "sit" instead. Always say what you want them to do.

5. Be consistent — Get the whole family on board with the goals. If some ban the sofa and others allow it, your dog will never understand. Consistency is the key to success.

6. Realistic expectations — Changing behaviours takes time. "Normal" behaviours (barking, jumping up, pulling on the lead) and old habits take longer. It's never too late to change, but some things take time.

7. Quality food — Feed them a high-quality diet with protein suited to their activity level. What you spend on good food, you save on trips to the vet. Consult your vet about the best diet.

8. We get what we reinforce — Unwanted behaviours often result from past reinforcement. If your dog barks to get you to throw the toy and succeeds, they've learnt that barking works. Ignore the barking or ask for a "sit" before throwing.

9. Bribery vs. reward — Dogs respond to what pleases them; using biscuits, strokes and toys is positive reinforcement. Every interaction is a learning opportunity — you can reinforce with a touch, a game or a walk.

10. Gradual freedom — Giving your new furry friend total freedom from the start leads to "accidents". Close doors, use gates to divide areas and, as they learn the rules, gradually extend their freedom around the house.
